General Statement of Duties:
Summit House is a psychiatric rehabilitation program informed by the Fountain House Model. Members (known as clients in other settings) are an integral part of the program.
This position’s primary responsibilities include:
Working together with members in rotating work units to complete the work of Summit House. This includes preparing meals and snacks, completing clean-up and other environmental tasks, and to providing clerical support to the program. Interventions used include side by side skills training, staff demonstration, practice/role-plays, and feedback, as well as ongoing prompting and cueing.
Facilitating a broad range of groups, activities and tasks intended to increase members’ role functioning and skills development. Topics may include socialization, leisure, education, work readiness, self-worth, self-advocacy, problem-solving, coping skills and medication self-management.
Management of an assigned caseload of members, including development of recovery goals and monitoring progress, while providing support and encouragement in role functioning and skills development.
This position will require individual to work both individually and as a team member, sometimes off-site, in various work and/or community integration settings.
Supervision will be provided by the Summit House supervisor via weekly staff meetings and individual supervision.
This work requires that confidentiality be maintained in accordance with Board policy and other (private health information) PHI standards of practice (HIPAA).
This position requires light physical work including walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, and lifting to execute job duties, as well as using kitchen and maintenance equipment.
This position is classified non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate psychoeducational and skill development groups and activities for members, including provision of proximal support as indicated
- Collaborate with other agency providers to assess treatment needs, participation, and progress
- Develop individualized treatment plans and maintenance of daily and quarterly progress documentation for members, in compliance with state licensing and other regulatory entities
- Monitor and assist members in skill development, practice and application in therapeutic milieu and in community integration settings
- Guide and educate assigned student interns from local colleges as applicable
- Participate in weekly staff meetings by providing insight and feedback in the management of program activities and member presentations
- Promptly intervene to de-escalate members during psychiatric crisis or to address disruptive behaviors; Mandt training is provided
- Promptly intervene to assist members during medical emergencies using basic first aid skills; training is provided
- Provide members with supportive mental health and problem-solving interventions
- Assist in management of day to day activities of program as assigned by supervisor based on program needs, including meal provision and household maintenance
- Participate in regular individual supervision with Summit House supervisor
- Participate in training that fosters professional growth
- Participate in treatment planning meetings with members and CSB treatment providers
- Make effective use of available technology, including computers, email and voice mail in order to enhance customer service
- Maintain effective relationships with co-workers and members based on courtesy, compassion and respect
- Assume other duties as assigned, consistent with established organizational policies and procedures
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Working knowledge of mental illness, trauma, and treatment principles
- Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to empathize, demonstrate respect, communicate warmly and honestly, reflect feelings, confront constructively and allow members to assume responsibility for themselves
- Ability to work effectively with members and service providers
- Ability to intervene effectively during psychiatric crisis or medical emergencies
- Knowledge of and adherence to basic ethics appropriate for a helping relationship
- Ability to derive and conduct education and training programs for members and service providers
- Ability to write concisely and clearly
- Sound clinical and situational judgment
- Ability to function independently as well as work as part of a team
- Basic computer literacy and word processing skills, including Microsoft Office, Windows, and electronic medical record
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related specialty; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. QMHP-A preferred.
Supervision of hours towards QMHP-A certification is provided for the right candidate.
Additional requirements
Possession of a valid and current driver’s license, and acceptable driving record. Mandt training, CPR and First Aid Certification required within first three months of hire.
Other Information:
Equipment: Telephone, vehicle, PC, word processing program, electronic health record, kitchen appliances, cleaning materials.
Work Environment: Community settings and offices with lighting levels, temperature ranges, air quality, and ventilation and noise levels as provided in each setting.
Work Location: Primarily Summit House and some community settings.
Work Hazards: Minimal hazards associated with general day-to-day activities; occasional hazards associated with problem behaviors. Some hazards associated with moving and lifting kitchen equipment and large or bulky items up to 25 lbs. Essential abilities to perform job duties including bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, sitting, standing, and walking.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm, some evening and weekend hours possible. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
HIPAA Access Level 2: Full read/write access to protected health information (PHI), limited to the minimum necessary, for all members directly served or assigned, as well as all members indirectly served through case consultation, clinical supervision, program management, or coverage requirements. Staff at Level 2 are allowed to seek out member PHI as necessary to perform their assigned duties, but are expected to exercise due precautions to limit exposure to any PHI which is outside the scope of their need to know. Utilization of information will be in accordance with HIPAA regulations regarding use limitation, disclosure and requests of PHI.
