What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68 children have been identified with ASD. Early identification of ASD is important in order to develop effective supports. Your pediatrician can begin the diagnostics process by completing a developmental checklist at your next appointment. Screening for ASD can typically begin at 18 months.
How can we help?
Learning your son or daughter has been diagnosed with Autism can leave you feeling overwhelmed with questions about what help is available. You’re not alone in finding the right services. HRCSB staff is available to explain what services exist and how to access them. We can help you understand and navigate Virginia’s Medicaid Waivers, provide referrals to private community partners for Applied Behavioral Analysis treatment or other services, or help connect you with local advocacy groups or support organizations for parents. Having an advocate who knows the system and is familiar with local, state, and national-level resources provides you with a smoother path and a friendly partner on a sometimes-overwhelming journey.
Services are changing.
Services for individuals with autism are changing. New Medicaid Waivers are being designed, with new services, new requirements, and new ways to access supports. Utilizing community based waiver supports can be a key component of an individual’s support plan, and the HRCSB will be the single point of entry for access to community waiver supports. If your child has been diagnosed with autism, and you would like to request a screening for DD Waiver Services, download and complete the Request for Screening in its entirety and mail to the Harrisonburg-Rockingham CSB, 1241 North Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA, 22802, attention DD Services.
